Russian Public Opinion Research Center: over half of Russians state they know about Bitcoin

17 January 2018 21:00, UTC

The latest survey made by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center shows a considerable progress of public awareness about Bitcoin in Russia when compared to the survey made by the National Agency for Financial Studies (NAFI) in summer 2017.

While only 16% responded to the NAFI they know about this topic, 56% of Russians told to the RPORC almost the same answer quite recently. Russians who only heard something about Bitcoin almost didn’t change in quantity: 14% today versus 16% in summer 2017. At that time, 12% of Russians knew about the topic in detail, and now the number has increased, although not considerably - 14%. The younger generation of Russians has much more public awareness: 75% of people 18-24 years old know about Bitcoin.

Oleg Chernozub, financial expert at the RPORC, tells that nobody is actually obliged to receive cryptocurrency payments, as they are not as legitimate as currencies produced by central banks, and thus cryptocurrency is not even a real currency. He reminds of an old investors’ rule: if the asset is mentioned on the TV shows for housewives, this indicates its drop in the near future.
