Israeli Police Arrest Suspects in the 2016 Bitfinex Hack

Two Israelis were arrested on suspicion of breaking into the Bitfinex crypto exchange, as well as other phishing attacks related to the cryptocurrency, Finance Magnates news agency reported on June 23.

The Israeli police spokesman said that Eli GIGI and his younger brother Assaf GIGI are accused of systematically stealing cryptocurrency for a long time by maliciously gaining access to the accounts of other users.

The brothers created duplicates of online exchanges and wallets and sent links to these phishing sites in Telegram groups and other cryptocurrency related communities. Both are also accused of being responsible for hacking Bitfinex in 2016, as a result of which several accounts have suffered. In early June, funds stolen from the above-mentioned attack were recently moved.

Police noted that the alleged victims were mainly from the EU and the United States, which led to an investigation of this issue by law enforcement agencies in several countries. The article also notes that Eli Gigi is a graduate of the elite technology unit of the Israel Defense Forces.
