Brave, the popular crypto-enabled web browser, has announced its commitment to a new privacy standard called Global Privacy Control. The new standard allows users to set a single setting in their browser that prevents websites from tracking, transmitting, and selling data. If the new standard becomes widespread, users will not need to cancel web tracking every time they visit sites.

The standard is already available through several browsers and apps, including Brave, DuckDuckGo, OptMeowt, Privacy Badger, Abine, and Disconnect. Several websites and companies, including The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Financial Times, have announced plans to comply with the standard.

Global Privacy Control has been compared to previous privacy measures such as Do Not Trace. However, this new standard has stronger legal support. The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) suggest these types of privacy controls. Although the standard is not yet required by law, the existence of these laws may induce companies to comply with it.
