Solana Labs’ subsidiary Solana Mobile announced Thursday the launch of an Android smartphone 'Saga', built specifically with Web3 in mind. The phone will come integrated with the Solana blockchain network.

Solana to Launch Android Smartphone

At a keynote event in New York City, Solana Labs CEO Anatoly Yakovenko disclosed the Solana Saga smartphone. Designed to make cryptocurrency trading easier, the 6.67-inch Android phone will launch in the first quarter of 2023 for $1,000. Interestingly, the Solana Saga is a rebrand of OSOM's OV1, built by a team consisting of former engineers and designers from Essential. The privacy-focused OV1 was slated to hit the market by the end of the year but now the two companies collaborated to create a rebrand of the same with a focus on Web3. Commenting on the development, founder and CEO Jason Keats, said:

“OSOM is incredibly excited to partner with Solana in building the Saga. The world needs novel hardware companies to support the future that is Web3. Building out an ecosystem that looks to the future without being burdened by past legacy ecosystems is hugely exciting.”

Solana Mobile Stack

Along with the smartphone, Solana also announced the launch of the Solana Mobile Stack software ecosystem for Android, for enabling native Android web3 apps on Solana.

The open-source software kit enables the development of native Android apps built around the Solana blockchain. The kit includes the Mobile Wallet Adapter, a protocol for plugging in mobile Solana wallets, with the feature working on all mobile devices, and not just Android.
