“I get knocked down, but I get up again” seems to be the phrase reverberating in Arthur Hayes’ head right now.

A week has passed since the infamous ‘Tangle in Taipei’ and yet, the full recording has not yet surfaced. An event devoid of major price movements, hardforks, and lawsuits [not yet at least] grabbed the attention of the collective cryptocurrency world as Nouriel Roubini, famed American economist and outspoken crypto-critic, clashed with Arthur Hayes, CEO of BitMEX at the Asia Blockchain Summit.

With the fervor surrounding the debate still effervescent in its effect, one would think another debate is on the cards. Ever since the Hayes-Roubini duo stepped off the stage, their jibes have however switched from the verbal to the digital.

Roubini, as he always does, called out his opponent and equated him to a ‘drug peddler,’ a ‘gambler,’ and a downright ‘criminal,’ adding that the cryptocurrency community is one filled with ‘conmen.’

His accusations were not just against Hayes, but against the business model of BitMEX as well which, according to the economist, is willfully ‘scamming’ people. Roubini even went as far as to say that he would “sue” Hayes if the tapes, which the latter apparently controls, are not released.

Using colorful words as always, Roubini stated,

@CryptoHayes is the biggest asshole, jerk, manipulator and criminal in the world. He is sending to select media a doctored edited highlights video of the debate to make me look bad cutting off all my points.I will sue them. This is sick criminal behaviour. Will not pass you coward

With the tapes being sealed shut and the two protagonists spewing insults at each other, the only neutral party would be actual observers of the debate. Despite the crowd being overwhelmingly composed of cryptocurrency proponents and given the nature of the summit, their opinions were fair-minded. Who said the cryptocurrency community was toxic?

CNBC’s CryptoTrader compiled the opinions of several prominent members of the community who were privy to the ‘Tangle in Taipei.’ According to the same, the undisputed winner was, surprise-surprise, Nouriel Roubini.

Mike Dudas of The Block who “feverishly” took notes during the debate stated that Roubini “came out the winner.” He added that Hayes’ specialty is with market structure, given his background in derivatives trading and hence, is less technical. While Roubini is not a genius in it either, he did not let-up in this clash.

Andrew Fei, Founder of the Asia Blockchain Summit, chimed in and pitched his flag firmly in the Roubini camp. Not mentioning any of Hayes’ misgivings during the clash, Fei said that the economist was just more convincing,

“The argument as presented by Nouriel Roubini was very strong.”

Lasse Clausen, Founding Partner at 1kx, equated Roubini’s debating prowess to American President Donald Trump with the use of ‘swear words’ and vulgar phrases, while maintaining that a different audience would have a divergent perspective on the outcome of the debate. Hence, there can’t be just one outright winner.

Jeff McDonald, Co-founder of NEM, stated that master-debater Nouriel Roubini came out on top, adding that victory did not always mean “that you are right.”

While the above presents a more nuanced, somber view of the debate, some have stated that if this were a boxing match, the ‘Tangle in Taipei’ would be a ‘Rumble in the Jungle,’ with the victor being Nouriel Roubini and Arthur Hayes being knocked-out cold on the floor of the Asia Blockchain Summit.
