A pen gun formerly possessed by late South African freedom fighter Oliver Tambo will be auctioned off as an NFT to collect cash for a cultural monument commemorating the country's battle for democracy.

Tambo headed the ANC for over a quarter-century, beginning in 1967 when he was exiled and the organization was proscribed for resisting South Africa's whites-only apartheid regime.

Auctioning off the NFT of Oliver Tambo's Pen Gun

He previously worked with Nelson Mandela and others to establish the ANC Youth League and coordinate the party's guerilla tactics. According to Liliesleaf, a South African heritage organization, the pen gun was delivered to Tambo by East Germany in the mid-1980s and was likely constructed by its secret police, known as the Stasi.

"While the pen gun cannot kill, it can severely hurt a would-be assassin," claimed Virtual Nation Builders, the blockchain company that tokenized the weapon. According to the South African NFT exchange Momint's website, the NFT will be auctioned off with a starting price of $5,000. The proceeds of the auction will be used to try to reopen the Liliesleaf Heritage Site.

Popularity of digital products

NFTs have grown in popularity in recent months, with caricatures of monkeys and lions fetching millions of dollars. Sports teams, premium automobile makers, and even pop singers are among those entering the new trading market, which employs blockchain technology to validate unique ownership tokens attached to otherwise readily replicable digital products. Music, photography, and digital art are among the most commonly exchanged NFT genres.
