Speculation had been circulating for a while regarding what Block.one had promised to announce today. Following the rumors of a new social media platform, EOS had surged 12%. Bloomberg is reporting that the rumors are true, Block.one has launched a new social media platform.
Called Voice, the platform uses the EOS digital ledger created by Block.one to let users post, share and promote content, with everything being registered on the EOS blockchain.
Being a blockchain-based social media platform, users could potentially have much more control over their posts and photos – an issue that has been gaining momentum after it became public knowledge that Facebook’s business model is built around harvesting user data.
“The truth is, current social media platforms are designed to use their users,” Brendan Blumer, chief executive officer of Block.one. “It’s the platform, not the user, that reaps the reward.”
Block.one is far from the first company to enter the social networking industry with blockchain. Kik Interactive already has a social media network up and running, utilizing its Kin tokens. Though, as Bloomberg reports, the US SEC is considering an enforcement against the company. Facebook has also been eyeing blockchain technology as well as developing its own cryptocurrency.
At the time of writing, EOS is up 4.72% to $8.26.
