Barstool Sports' Dave Portnoy says he’s got $1 million in Bitcoin

What sounded like a fever dream has become a Twitter reality: the Winklevoss twins, Cameron and Tyler, really did show up at the house of outspoken Barstool Sports president Dave Portnoy to teach him about Bitcoin, blockchain, and cryptocurrency.

And while it was debatable whether the Gemini co-founders were really wearing the full rowing uniforms (from their college days and The Social Network), as Portnoy originally demanded, they did come with a mission: “We’re here to make you a Bitcoin billionaire,” said one brother.

Portnoy looked perplexed as they explained how Bitcoin mining and blockchain work, with the brothers saying things such as “Blockchain is like a scorecard” and “miners are like a referee.”

“Gold is for boomers,” they added. “Bitcoin is the only fixed asset in the galaxy.”

Even if Portnoy didn’t fully understand what he was getting into, he had no hesitation buying more crypto. He said that he had already purchased $250,000 worth of Bitcoin and he purchased a further undisclosed amount on the stream. He also talked about buying Chainlink, although the video didn’t show whether he followed through with that or not.

Since the video was filmed, Portnoy tweeted that he now has at least $1 million worth of Bitcoin to his name, calling himself “the baron of Bitcoin.” He also tweeted, “1200 here we come #Bitcoin,” and quickly revised that to say, “I meant 12000000000.”

Portnoy commands a large audience with his 1.7 million Twitter followers and the immense collective following of the Barstool Sports coverage network, and while the stream seemingly peaked at 6.7K viewers while live, it has since amassed some 72K total views in a matter of minutes.

And while it’s hard to tell how serious Portnoy is about anything during his videos, he talked repeatedly about creating a “DaveCoin” to pump and dump, and prodded the Winklevoss twins to hook him up with engineers to make it happen.

Given Portnoy’s rabid following and the way crypto Twitter flocks to any celebrity mentioning Bitcoin, we wouldn’t be surprised to see him goaded into following through with it.
