Following on from the announcement made a few days ago by the CEO of TRON, Justin Sun, the new BitTorrent File System (BTFS) has now been officially launched. The decentralized storage system will be available for public access and will be used to support all Tron (TRX) dApps that need storage.

Sun announced the launch of BTFS earlier this week, keeping fairly tight-lipped as to the details.

Welcome to the next generation of decentralized storage systems! #BTFS will be the largest decentralized P2P storage network with close to 100 million @BitTorrent user nodes, over 1000 #TRON full nodes, 27 SR nodes, and global #TronGrid nodes. 3 days left! Today, an official press release has revealed much more about BTFS and Bittorrents future plans...

What is BTFS?

BTFS is essentially Tron's version of Interplanetary File System (IFPS), the protocol behind Filecoin (FIL). Businesses and private users can make use of a distributed network in order to store and receive their digital files, meaning they don't need to rely on a centralized server or hosted cloud storage.

Q3 of 2019 will see a mainnet running the BitTorrent BTFS launched supporting all TRON dApps as well as BitTorrent network transactions.

According to an official announcement, the BTFS platform will integrate BitTorrent Token (BTT) in late 2019, in order to provide incentives that should help the file-sharing and storage marketplace become fairer and more efficient.

BTFS incorporates the 100 million users that make up the BitTorrent network, the 1,000+ nodes on the Tron network, as well as the TronGrid service, which functions as an important gateway connecting the different parts of the eco-system. BitTorrent aims to make BTFS the world’s largest distributed storage and media sharing network.

"BTFS is a continuing step in our mission to create a decentralized internet that allows everyone to share in the wealth of web commerce," said Justin Sun, "We’re creating a platform with BTFS, BitTorrent Speed blockchain integration and the BTT utility token to let users quickly and privately interact with each other around the world without a middleman or government intervention."

A comprehensive toolset is due to be released for BTFS, and the BTFS Accelerator will cultivate dozens of BTFS-based DApps. The full rollout should be completed by early 2020.
