The team of developers at Input Output Global (IOG, formerly IOHK) have started the final stages of activating the Vasil update on Cardano's mainnet.

According to the company's CEO, Charles Hoskinson, the developers have started the hard fork combiner mechanism.

He has said:

"The hard fork combiner application has been submitted and successfully accepted. Which means the process has begun. We will all sit back and watch the Vasil rocket take off. It's already in the air. There is no turning back now. It's all started."

The Hard Fork Combinator (HFC) is a protocol fusion tool developed by IOG that enables large-scale updates to the blockchain "in the background."

HFC was first used in July 2020 when the Shelley update was activated in Cardano. The mechanism eliminates blockchain integrity violation and network downtime, as nodes do not need to simultaneously upgrade to the latest software version; the transition takes place over time.

Vasil will go live on the mainnet on September 22.
