Hardware wallet company, Ledger and e-commerce giant Shopify have been hit by a class-action lawsuit over a massive data breach that happened last year. Over 270,000 customers of Ledger saw their personal data being exposed on the dark web. The data leak contained full names, email, phone numbers, and shipping addresses leaked on darknet site RaidForums in late December.

Roche Freedman Files Lawsuit Against Ledger and Shopify

Victims of last year’s Ledger data breach, John Chu and Edward Baton filed a class-action lawsuit in California against Ledger and Shopify on April 6.  The law firm, Roche Freedman filed a formal complaint against the two companies on behalf of the two lead plaintiffs.

Remarking on the lawsuit, Kyle Roche, a partner of the law firm, said:

“We’ve been investigating this since the day it became public. This investigation included speaking with experts in the data security and cryptocurrency fields.”

The lawsuit accused Ledger and Shopify of their misconduct:

“Ledgers and Shopify’s misconduct has made targets of Ledger customers, with their identities known or available to every hacker in the world. Ledger’s persistently deficient response compounded the harm. In failing to individually notify every affected customer or admit to the full scope of the breach.”

Roche Freedman is known for its class-action lawsuit against crypto firms Binance, Tron and iFinex, the parent company of Tether and Bitfinex. Last week, the law firm filed a lawsuit on behalf of a customer of Nexo, a regulated crypto financial institution.

Shopify Employee Responsible for the Data Leak

Ledger confirmed that access to their user database had been a result of the Shopify hack. Both the companies identified a rogue Shopify employee being responsible for the leak.

Meanwhile, Ledger reassured its users that their hardware wallets had not been compromised and that their funds were safe. However, the damage was already done with some users receiving threats of home invasion and other scare tactics.
