Crypto app Electroneum (ETN) has announced the expansion of its service coverage in four additional African countries that include Benin, Togo, Côte d’Ivoire, and Sierra Leone.  Till yet, Electroneum is the only company to provide electricity top-ups with crypto. The app boasts nearly 4.1 million registered users. The in-app electricity top-up app has been already live across African regions such as Nigeria, Mali, Gambia, Senegal, and Guinea-Bissau.

Electroneum Expands Electricity Top-up Coverage in Africa

Electricity and mobile airtime are considered daily essentials worldwide. The app enables people to send airtime and electricity refills using Electroneum’s app, saving both time and costs associated with transportation.

Topping up airtime and electricity with the Electroneum is conveniently cheaper, according to the CEO of Electroneum, Richard Ells:

“Topping up airtime and electricity with the Electroneum app costs a fraction of a US cent. In countries where the minimum wage is $2 to $3 a day or sometimes even less, to pay up to $5 for a $50 transfer makes a huge difference.

In most of the developing countries, airtime and data often act as a medium of exchange, where immigrant workers can send their families airtime instead of a transfer through Western Union, Ells adds:

“This means immigrant workers can send their families airtime instead of a transfer through Western Union, for example, and the recipients can then trade that airtime for funds they then cab use to purchase food and other everyday essentials. And they can also top-up electricity meters remotely.”

Electroneum Offers Mobile Airtime Top-ups Across 163 Countries

With over 4 million registered users, Electroneum’s expansion in Africa is more focused on utilizing its ETN token for utility bill payments and mobile airtime subscriptions through the app.

The company is now working towards partnering directly with electricity companies and mobile network operators. The purpose behind this is to ensure users enjoy base rates on electricity top-ups and mobile airtime recharge payments.

As of 25th November 2020, Electroneum became the largest crypto startup to offer mobile airtime top-ups across 163 countries.
