Branded merch sporting crypto insignia is on the move, from new cleats to smartphones.

BTCPay Server, an open source payment processor that enables merchants to accept Bitcoin, has tapped Los Angeles Chargers offensive tackle Russell Okung to help introduce Bitcoin to 24 million sports fans with brand new footwear.

Bitcoin bull Okung, who has asked the NFL to pay his salary in BTC, is pumped about his new role repping BTCPay Server, a company that’s perfectly aligned with his goal of making Bitcoin an everyday currency, a method of payment and a salary option.

Says Okung,

Civilization has evolved just a little bit more today. BTCPay Server has now been introduced to 24M sports fans — freedom wins!”

Calling himself the official “Bitcoin cleats guy,” Okung is eager to sport the colors and logo of the permissionless BTC payment processor, which he describes as “low key miraculous,” revolutionary tech that’s allowing “Pay Me In Bitcoin” to become more of a reality.

“When I said ‘Pay Me In Bitcoin’ I meant it for real. Making this request a reality for merchants and many other use cases is so important to seeing the bitcoin economy mature & thrive. BTCPay Server is quietly redefining e-commerce.”

He and his team at Bitcoinis have also spun up a portal to accept BTC at events and for in-store purchases.

He adds,

“Imagine what that means for ppl in Venezuela or Nigeria needing to transact but having unique limitations when participating in the legacy financial system.”
