Those who have been in the crypto industry for a number of years will have heard of Silk Road, the marketplace founded on the Dark Web in 2011 by Ross Ulbricht where everything could be purchased in Bitcoin.

Described as “the Amazon of drugs”, Silk Road was shut down by the FBI on October 3, 2013 and in 2015 Ross was imprisoned and sentenced in first instance to life imprisonment for the crimes of conspiracy, computer fraud, distribution of false identities, money laundering, drug trafficking, internet drug trafficking and conspiracy to traffic drugs.

Since then, his mother Lyn has been fighting the system for his release from prison, or at least a reduction in his sentence, which is far too severe.

The Cryptonomist decided to interview her in support of the cause and to learn more about the events that led to Ulbricht‘s incarceration.
