Prince Harry, Billie Eilish, Olympian Simone Biles, and Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin all made the list. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin was named one of Time magazine’s most influential people this year, among singers, world leaders, activists, and others.

Buterin included in Time’s list of 2021

Buterin is included in Time’s list of 2021’s innovators, alongside Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Tesla CEO and proponent of Dogecoin (DOGE) Elon Musk, and others. Buterin’s involvement in growing the Ethereum network to a market capitalization of more than $400 billion, as well as supporting the development of decentralized apps and non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, was highlighted in Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian’s profile on the Ethereum co-founder.

No single person could have seen all of the possibilities for Ethereum, but it did take one person’s concept to get it started, according to Ohanian. From there, a whole new world has opened up, with new methods to use blockchain technology.

The long-running publication appears to have become more open to both reporting about and accepting cryptocurrency in its own operations. Time said in March that it was looking for a chief financial officer with experience with Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, and also auctioned three NFTs based on some of its magazine covers.

The magazine is accepting cryptocurrency for subscription payments

The magazine announced the following month that it would accept cryptocurrency payments for digital subscriptions, further integrating cryptocurrencies into its business. In addition, Time stated it would be holding Bitcoin (BTC) — received as payment for an instructional video series — on its balance sheets as part of a relationship with fund manager Grayscale. In a Sept. 13 interview, president Keith Grossman remarked, they aren’t even in the first inning of what we want to do with crypto.

Vitalik Buterin, the Ethereum founder, has been named to Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential persons in the world (Time 100), which has been published annually since 2004. The vehicle provides the names of emerging leaders from around the world who, according to Time, are creating the future and defining the next generation of leadership.  And since the Russian-Canadian writer and programmer was responsible for creating the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency, Ether (ETH), as well as a massive system called Ethereum — blockchain, it’s impossible not to mention Buterin when it comes to innovation, disruption, or decentralization in the global financial system.
