Vitalik weighs in on Ethereum post-hardfork troubles with "big scary nodes"

The recent Ethereum (ETH) hardforks, Constantinople and St.Petersburg, mostly went ahead without any major problems. However, one major node on the network has faced some issues, and reached out to Vitalik for help.

According to a blogpost, an Ethereum API that was being run by BlockCypher was "knocked out for almost a month due to the Constantinople Hard Fork", despite extensive preparations ahead of the upgrade. This only happened with the Ethereum network, as other nodes being run on different blockchains continued to function.

The team were led, in their desperation, to contact Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin himself in order to work out what the issue was. Vitalik was surprised, as they were "one of the few running one of those big, scary nodes". The entire transaction history of the network was part of its API, which is apparently something that even the Ethereum Foundation doesn't have.

Observers on Twitter are questioning how relevant and accurate this story may be. Many criticized Vitalik and the Ethereum team for the unwieldy and over-complex state that the blockchain is now in, with others pointing out that they had similar problems. Some believe that this is mostly FUD against Ethereum, and that some of the issues mentioned here have been overstated.

Ethereum archive node (the ~ 3 TB one) is only needed to run a block explorer. A Full Node is 166 GB. An archive node can be synced fully from a full node. Feel free to educate yourself on the topic.

Sounds like FUD.
You CAN sync state from any full node, you don't need archival node for that. Copying over the state archive is NOT what people normally call 'sync'.

It's strange as we are running one of them in Italy and we also know at least two other teams that are doing the same in Switzerland and UK.
