Chia Network, the blockchain and smart transaction platform created by BitTorrent founder Bram Cohen, will provide technical services to Costa Rica’s national climate change metrics system (SINAMMEC), Chia said on Thursday.

Through a memorandum of understanding, the Costa Rican government will use Chia’s blockchain technology to develop an open-source software platform for improving the management of its “climate inventory,” Chia said.

The platform, which will be shared free of charge with other countries, will also operate national registries “to manage carbon inventory, climate registry, and record bilateral corresponding adjustments with trades to shift credits among countries,” Chia announced.

Created in 2018, SINAMECC is Costa Rica’s official platform for coordinating climate information and tracking the country’s national climate change policy.

Andrea Meza Murillo, Minister of Environment and Energy of Costa Rica, said that the announcement “is a critical step toward robust, transparent cooperation on climate action focused on environmental integrity.”

“Teaming Costa Rica’s leadership in this initiative with the Chia blockchain will create real momentum to enable markets to help solve global, real world problems,” Chia Network president and COO Gene Hoffman said in an email to CoinDesk.

Last week, Chia announced it was developing a>Climate Warehouse, which would facilitate “the transparent sharing and reporting of climate project information and its issuances,” it said in a fact sheet.
