Blockchain technology has continued to gain relevance in different sectors across the world as many institutions realize the benefits of this new technology. One region that has been slow with adopting blockchain technology in Africa with the awareness levels lower than other regions.
However, this looks likely to change as several tech giants in the region are starting to launch programs and initiatives to promote blockchain technology application. Telecommunications giants Vodafone recently revealed that it had launched a blockchain initiative in Ghana.
Blockchain Initiative Trains over 500 Students
The blockchain technology initiative was in partnership with IBN, Stanbic Bank and Hacklab foundation and sought to empower students from different institutions within the country.
The program attracted over 500 developers from across 16 institutions in Ghana and took place during the HackLab Foundation’s Hackathon in April at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
The blockchain initiative was themed ‘Can blockchain technology transform the service sector’ during the workshop, students were tasked with providing workable and scalable solutions to the problems facing the African and Ghanaian market using blockchain technology.
The blockchain initiative revealed to participants the possibilities if using blockchain technology to create solutions in different sectors of the economy including Education, Healthcare, Transportation, Manufacturing and Financial sectors.
Students that participated received awards in 10 different fields within blockchain technology fields. Other perks received by exceptional students within the program included internships, job opportunities and investment for students with feasible blockchain solutions.
While the team that won the group competition got the opportunity to partake in the Hacklab-GSBS Start-up School which is essentially a 6-week program to further develop their blockchain solutions with the support of the tech firm.
Hacklab foundation revealed in a statement after the program that the opportunity to expose young talents to blockchain technology was a good development for the future of digital revolution in Ghana.
“We are always excited about the opportunity to unearth young talents in the digital technology sector. Blockchain technology is a very fascinating concept which has captured the attention of the world and this hackathon is a demonstration of our commitment to lead a digital revolution in Ghana.”
Vodafone has always championed the rise of digital initiatives in Ghana as the telecommunications company has always supported different initiatives.
This new blockchain initiative is a good development and could position Ghana as a leading player for cryptocurrency adoption in Africa in the future.
