EtherDelta hacked, operations suspended

21 December 2017 21:00, UTC

The official Twitter of EtherDelta publishes warnings about their site under attack. Hackers reportedly managed to intercept the DNS server of this cryptocurrency exchange that allows change coins into other coins without any user verification. The management of EtherDelta recommends not to use the website right now and watch out for the fake version which lacks the “Chat” button and Twitter feed box. The main danger of this type of attack is that users enter the valid URL but get to the fake version of the website made by hackers.

Coinmarketcap’s data suggests that this exchange operates with over $10 million a day, and this attack might have jeopardized the money stored on this exchange. Some reports suggest that a sum of $266,789 had been stolen.

Ethereum went down to $641 on Coinmarketcap, and this news might have influenced the sentiment of traders. Bitcoin’s fall usually influences neighbouring altcoins as well due to its solid share on the cryptocurrency market - 40-50%. Quite possibly, this combination of two factors made Ethereum fall even further down than Bitcoin (BTC -22.75%, ETH -26.04%).
