BIP 91 activated on the Bitcoin network

23 July 2017 21:00, UTC

In the night from July 22 to July 23, 2017, the BIP 91 upgrade proposal was activated on the Bitcoin network, Bitcoin.com reported. The BIP 91 activation means that from now on, blocks that don’t signal SegWit will be rejected by the network.

According to various sources of xbt.eu, BIT 91 protocol is supported by 97% of miners, including 15 major mining pools.

BIP 91 protocol is compatible with BIP 148 (UASF, also known as soft fork), another SegWit activation solution. Thereby this activation will help to avoid the anticipated hard fork (UAHF) and the segregation of Bitcoin blockchain into two or more chains.

The official implementation of the protocol will take place at the end of August, and before this happens, BIP 91 will have to deal with yet another period of difficulty increase and SegWit lock-in. However, some Bitcoin community members express doubts that hard fork will not take place – this still can happen due to 2MB network upgrade 3 months after the activation of SegWit.
