Namecheap, a web hosting company, discovered that some unauthorized emails were being sent to MetaMask users by misusing one of its third-party services. MetaMask, a well-known provider of crypto wallets, warned investors about ongoing phishing attempts made by scammers to contact users via Namecheap's third-party upstream email system.

NameCheap's Services Used to Target MetaMask Users

Namecheap, a web hosting company, discovered on Feb. 12 that one of its third-party services had been misused to send some unauthorized emails that directly targeted MetaMask users. The incident was referred to by Namecheap as an "email gateway issue." The hacker's phishing emails include a link to a fictitious MetaMask website where a secret recovery phrase titled "to keep your wallet secure" is requested.

Caution to Investors

The wallet provider advised investors not to share seed phrases because doing so gives the hacker complete control over the user's funds. NameCheap also confirmed that neither was its customer data was compromised nor were its services breached. Namecheap confirmed within two hours of the initial announcement that mail delivery had been restored and that all communications would now originate from the official source. The main problem with sending unsolicited emails, on the other hand, is still under investigation. When dealing with communications from MetaMask and Namecheap, investors should double-check website links, email addresses, and points of contact.
