World-leading blockchain infrastructure provider, Chiliz who is also the owner of Socio.com has acquired nearly a quarter of FC Barcelona’s digital-content creation arm.

Joan Laporta, the president of the Spanish football club, announced the news during the official presentation of Jules Koundé. Shortly after, FC Barcelona publicized the merger on its official Twitter page.

Chiliz invested $100 million into Barça Studios’ non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and obtained a 24.5% stake in the Spanish soccer giant’s digital-content creation arm. The sales were conducted per the authorization of the General Assembly of FC Barcelona Members which was held in October last year.

The fund will be utilized to accelerate FC Barcelona’s audiovisual, blockchain, NFT and Web3.0 strategy. The Barca Studios facilities centralize all the audiovisual offers of FC Barcelona. It is a platform where either video or audio content is created and distributed.

Based on the club members’ agreement, up to 49% of the Studio’s shares can be sold out. As of now, 24.5% of the shares have been sold leaving behind another 24.5% which is open for sale. Socios.com now has full rights and control over the fraction of acquired Barça Studios.

The Barça Studios

The Barça Studios Shares which Socios.com now has control over are the club’s Metaverse presence, the newly launched NFTs, and the club’s Fans Token. Socios.com has already commercialized Barca’s Fan Tokens which are listed on its platform.

Other football clubs like Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City utilize the platform to offer their fans a more beneficial user experience. The fans can purchase their club’s token and have access to earning VIP exclusive benefits.

Laporta is optimistic that the sale of the Barça Studio will allow the registration of the next new summer signings to go on with ease. According to him, FC Barcelona’s third ‘economic lever’ has been activated. “The club has one more financial “lever” they can activate with the sale of 49% of Barça Licensing and Merchandising (BLM)”.

Meanwhile, FC Barcelona sold its newly launched ‘In a way, Immortal’ NFT at the Sotheby’s auction in New York. The auction closed at $550,000 but the aggregate sale including Sotheby Premium which is 26% of the hammer price was $693,000.
