ArchiveNode.io, an Ethereum mainnet archive node service, has announced it would be closing down. After more than three years of offering free Ethereum mainnet archive node services to developers, students, and academics, ArchiveNode.io announced the news on April 4.
To maintain a complete record of past state transitions in the Ethereum network, clients may be set up to act as Ethereum Archive Nodes. This sort of node helps gain access to blockchain data that is too old to be retrieved by full nodes.
Archive Nodes can be created from scratch since they are not responsible for performing block validation, but they need a lot more space for data storage than regular nodes. The statement came from the project’s creator, “DeFi Dude,” who said the service was being discontinued because “we succeeded” and other solutions exist now that weren’t available when they debuted.
Widespread Availability of RPC Providers
He continued by saying that when the initiative first began, nobody was operating any Archive Nodes. Infura, a supplier of Ethereum’s underlying infrastructure, charged users $250 per month to have access to historical data.
The goal of the project was to “get archive data into the hands of developers, students, and researchers who wanted to build cool shit, but didn’t have the time, money, or resources available to run their own archive node.”
He emphasized that making money was never the goal of the endeavor. He also said the initiative was at present unnecessary because of the widespread availability of RPC providers that give access to historical data. ArchiveNode.io expressed gratitude to the Ethereum Foundation, which provided seed funding in the form of $10,000 in Amazon Web Services (AWS) credits.
