Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has proposed adding the zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zkEVM) to the base layer of the Ethereum blockchain. Buterin believes that the zkEVM can speed up the verification process without compromising decentralization and security. The technology of ZK proofs will enable the execution of smart contracts on the blockchain. Buterin has also considered options of keeping most activities on Layer 2. He prefers the zkEVM approach, which will maintain Ethereum's multi-client philosophy, allow for new customer development, and further decentralize the base layer.
