Bitcoin Core version 31.0 has officially been released, marking a new upgrade to the software that powers the Bitcoin ($BTC) network. The update is now available for download and introduces a set of changes focused on privacy and node-level efficiency. The release includes new features and bug fixes, which continues the steady iteration that underpins Bitcoin’s long-term development.

What’s new in Bitcoin Core 31.0

According to the project’s GitHub page, the most notable changes center on how the Bitcoin network handles transactions and data. A redesigned mempool structure aims to improve how nodes prioritize and validate transactions, which can lead to more efficient block construction and better fee market behavior.

There are also updates to replace-by-fee logic, which makes sure that transaction replacements improve overall network conditions rather than degrade them. This reduces edge cases where the system could previously be gamed or behave unpredictably.

On the performance side, default database cache limits have been increased on higher-memory systems, allowing nodes to process data more efficiently, albeit with higher resource usage.

Privacy improvements are also part of the release. A new “private broadcast” option allows transactions to be relayed through networks like Tor or I2P, reducing the ability to link transactions to a specific IP address.

Meanwhile, at the time of publication on April 22, $BTC was changing hands at the price of $78,229.18, which represents an increase of 3% in the last 24 hours, a 5.4% gain across the past week, and an accumulated advance of 14.2% over the month, according to the most recent chart information.

Why this release is important

Bitcoin Core updates rarely move markets, but they shape how the network functions under the hood. Every release tightens the system and prepares the protocol for future use cases.

Version 31.0 continues that trend. Instead of introducing a single headline feature, it refines multiple layers of the stack, from transaction relay to node operation.

This is important for developers and node operators who rely on predictable and efficient behavior. It also reinforces Bitcoin’s core philosophy: gradual, conservative upgrades rather than disruptive changes.

In practice, this is how Bitcoin evolves: through steady improvements that compound over time.
